A screening estimate of your Scope 1, 2 and 3 emissions.

Five activities, published factors, and the reporting year shown next to every one of them — official government sources for the UK, Germany, the Netherlands and France, and Ember, an independent dataset, for Sweden. This covers a deliberately narrow slice of a GHG inventory — enough to see the shape of your footprint before committing to a full assessment.

GHG Screening Calculator

Used only to label the PDF export. Nothing is transmitted anywhere.

Scope 1 Direct emissions

Annual consumption for sites you own or control. kWh is what appears on most energy bills.

Vehicle fuel — company-owned vehicles

Enter whichever you actually hold — one or the other, never both. Litres are the more accurate basis.

litres

Diesel and petrol only. DEFRA publishes no unknown-fuel factor per litre, so “not known” works with distance only.

Scope 2 Purchased electricity
kWh

Location-based methodology only. A market-based figure — a renewable tariff backed by certificates — is a separate calculation this tool does not perform.

Scope 3 Business travel & commuting

Business travel — air

km

Distance one way. Use the return toggle below to double it for the return leg. If you are entering an annual total across many flights rather than a single trip, set the haul selector explicitly — auto-classification reads this figure as one trip.

Trip basis

DEFRA classifies haul by destination territory, not distance. Auto applies a 3 700 km one-way cut-off as a screening convenience — override it if you know the destination’s class.

Employee commuting

people
km
days

Calculated as employees × one-way km × 2 × days per week × 44 working weeks. 44 weeks allows for leave, public holidays and sickness — an assumption, not a published factor.

Screening estimate • not a GHG Protocol inventory

What this covers

Scope 1 natural gas and company vehicle fuel. Scope 2 purchased electricity, location-based, for five countries. Scope 3 business air travel and employee commuting — calculated from your actual headcount, distance, days and mode, not a flat per-head figure.

What it deliberately doesn’t

No market-based Scope 2. No refrigerants, process emissions, water, waste, purchased goods, capital goods, freight, homeworking or any other Scope 3 category. No readiness score, no cost estimate, no ranking — only the emissions themselves.

Factors and sources

Every factor applied by this tool, with its publisher, reporting year and unit. Nothing here is interpolated or estimated. The UK, German, Dutch and French factors come from official government datasets; Sweden uses Ember, an independent energy think tank, because no official Swedish equivalent is published — it is labelled as such wherever it appears.

This is a simplified screening estimate covering only the categories listed above. It is not a full GHG Protocol inventory, it is not assured, and it is not a substitute for the complete assessment ANJ delivers as part of a real engagement. Emission factors differ in gas coverage and system boundary between national publishers; those differences are disclosed beside each factor and are not reconciled here.

A screening number is a starting point, not a reportable figure.

A real inventory needs complete activity data, a defined organisational boundary, the full set of relevant Scope 3 categories, and an audit trail from every figure back to its source. That is the work itself.
